Sometimes a special story begins with someone simply listening.
For Capital Hotel School, this special visit began when our Managing Director, Ronel Bezuidenhout, heard 10-year-old Blessing Skhosana on the 702 Breakfast Show with Bongani Bingwa, where she won an impressive R10 000 on the station’s Whizz Quiz. While her achievement was remarkable in itself, it was Blessing’s bright personality, confidence, and passion to become a chef one day that truly left a lasting impression.
Ronel immediately felt that this was a child whose passion deserved to be encouraged and celebrated. What began with hearing a young girl’s voice on the radio quickly became a shared mission: to turn that moment into an unforgettable experience for a child with a dream.
From the moment Blessing arrived, there was a genuine warmth about the day. She came surrounded by a close-knit, humble and incredibly supportive family whose pride in her was beautiful to witness. Her parents’ quiet gratitude, the excitement of her siblings, and the joy of having her cousin Nthati share in the day all added something deeply special to the experience.
It did not feel like hosting guests. It felt like welcoming family.
After Blessing shared that pizza is her favourite food, we knew exactly what had to be on the menu for the day. Blessing and Nthati spent the morning in our training kitchens where, dressed in chef hats and aprons, they stepped into the role of young chefs for the day. Guided by our team, Chef Wesley and Chef Reinate, they mixed dough from scratch, rolled out pizza bases, chose toppings and baked their own pizzas – an experience filled with laughter, learning and the kind of hands-on fun that creates lasting memories.
Watching Blessing in the kitchen was a joy. She was curious, engaged and eager to try everything. There was such innocence and wonder in the way these young girls approached every moment, and such delight in seeing their confidence grow as the morning unfolded.
Beyond the pizza-making session, Blessing joined our Open Day activities and experienced the energy of our campus, interacting with staff, students and our chef lecturers. She was welcomed into the heart of what we do, not simply as a visitor, but as someone whose dream mattered to us.
An unexpected moment came when Ronel Bezuidenhout wrote a personal letter to Blessing, encouraging her to keep dreaming big and believe in herself. Moved by Blessing’s story, Ronel also quietly contributed towards her schooling as a gesture of support for her future.
The girls were also gifted ingredients to take home and make their own pizzas, a few special souvenirs, and plenty of photographs to capture the memories – but what made the experience truly special was the warmth, encouragement and genuine care shared with Blessing and her family throughout their visit.
This experience came together through the enthusiasm and care of many people across the CHS family, and it reflects something we value deeply as a school – that hospitality is not only about what we teach, but how we make people feel.
Perhaps one day, we may welcome Blessing back to our kitchens again – not as a guest this time, but as a student chef beginning her own professional journey. What a privilege that would be.
Because sometimes dreams begin with flour on your hands and pizza in the oven. And sometimes they begin because someone took the time to listen…♥
