What are the Entry Requirements for Studying at Our Culinary School?
We don’t require anything other than a Matric certificate or an equivalent thereof, with reasonable grades and a passion for the culinary arts as a requirement for the full-time chef courses. This means that your APS score and the subjects you took in school have no direct impact on your admission process.
It’s about your love for creating gastronomy masterpieces, your ability to work and learn among many cultures and to respect differences. It is also about your commitment to attend class, do your best in practical training at the culinary establishments with which we associate, your ability to work in a team, lead when necessary, and above all – your passion for the industry.
For the in-service training, we have other entry requirements, which, in some instances, require that you already work within the hospitality industry. If you partake in the in-service training, you will need access to a computer as we follow a blended learning approach. This entails a combination of learning methods, such as online, self-paced learning, a skills portfolio, practical training at your place of work, as well as a specific number of in-person contact days at our campus in Pretoria for assessments and monitoring.
What can you study at CHS?
Our full-time course selection is comprehensive and includes from hospitality and generic management to chef courses. We recommend first assessing what you want from your career and what interests you. Do you, for instance, enjoy working with people or do you like working behind the scenes? Are you exceptionally well-organised? These and many other factors will affect your final choice of study.
If you don’t yet know whether you will want to plan events, manage a group of people, open your own business, have a need to travel or want to create culinary masterpieces, we suggest viewing our careers section. You will find a comprehensive career guidance, including a downloadable brochure on the types of careers you can follow within the hospitality, tourism, and culinary fields, to help you decide which course is best suited for you.
